Library information for new users
The picture on the screen shows students in the library.
The library provides the members of the HTWK Leipzig with literature for research, teaching and studying.
But it is also open to the public!
We offer:
- more than 250.00 printed books
- ca. 60.000 e-books
- ca. 190 licenced databases
- more than 300 printed journals
- ca. 26.000 e-journals
The collections of the library are based on the university courses.
On the screen, the following terms appear one after another:
Multimedia Technology, Computer Science, Digital Printing Technologies, Civil Engineering, Library and Information Science, Electrical Engineering, Museology, Mechanical Engineering, Social Work, Architecture, Packaging Technology and Sustainability, Bookselling and Publishing Management, Business Administration, Energy, Building Services and Environmental Engineering
We also have about 200 study places.
Pictures are shown of the different kinds of study places:
- computer workstations
- single-study rooms
- group-study rooms
- and many study places in our reading rooms
A video is shown in the background. It shows an installation in one of the reading rooms and consists of moving and turning rods which are interconnected.
Maybe this installation by Rolf Lieberknecht can help you when you are stuck with a problem?
There are also a scanner, a copying machine and a work and study place for visually impaired persons. The latter one is located on the third floor.
A picture of a printer is shown.
Would you like to print something? There is a central printer. You can send a printing order from any computer in the library. There is a detailed how-to guide in the video tutorials.
If you want to copy or print something, you first need to charge your student ID.
The minimum amount is 20 cents.
Watch out! There are two accounts on your student ID, one for the cafeteria and one for printing and copying.
The prices for prints and copies are:
A4 = 5 cents per page
A3 = 10 cents per page
Do you need a notebook, a presenter or a headset? No problem! Members of the HTWK can check out technical equipment.
Two students looking at a research computer are shown.
Have you found the book you need in the catalogue?
The books on the shelves are organised according to the subject, which is represented by a colour, and according to the specific topic, which is represented by “DK”, as well as a current number. DK means “Decimal Classification”.
There are some special cases, e.g. the reference collection, the textbook collection and journals.
There is a detailed guide on how to find a specific item on the shelf in this tutorial.
Would you like to become a library user?
You don’t have to do anything!
As a student, you are automatically registered as a library user and have a user account.
Your student ID is your library ID. Your user number is printed on your student ID. It can be found on the right side of your photo.
A picture of a female student at the self-service station is shown.
Use the self-service station or let your items be checked out at the service desk.
In general, the loan period is four weeks.
Within six months, you can renew the loan period as often as you like.
Except when another user has requested the book. It is not possible to renew the loan period then.
Would you like to renew the loan period?
The easiest way is directly in your user account.
You can access it via the library’s website.
Or you can renew the loan period via e-mail, phone or in person at the service desk.
Hint: You will receive an e-mail reminder three days before the loan period ends.
Using the library’s services is free of charge as long as you return the items or renew the loan period on time.
The fee for late returns is 1 EUR per book per week.
A picture of a female student returning books at the service desk is seen.
Books can be returned at the service desk.
When the library is closed, you can use the book-return bin at the rear end of the building.
An exterior view of the library is shown. An arrow points to the courtyard of the building.
You can access the book-return bin through the passage on the left side of the library. Then turn right where the staff entrance of the library is located. The book-return bin is on the left side of the door.
Would you like to use the computer workstations?
A picture of the computer workstations in the library is shown.
We provide:
Stand-up workstations and sit-down workstations.
The stand-up workstations are research computers. You can use them to access the website and the library catalogue. This makes them perfect when searching for items and their location.
The sit-down workstations are perfect for complex research, accessing the digital collections and academic writing.
The log in for all computer workstations is your university login.
Do you have any questions? Our e-learning courses and tutorials can help you!
